Weekly Tech Tip: Email Safety — Spot the Red Flags in 10 Seconds

We all rely on email every day to stay connected and keep things moving. At the same time, email remains one of the most common ways scammers try to gain access to information.

The good news: most suspicious emails can be identified in just a few seconds once you know what to look for.

Quick Red Flags to Watch For

Be cautious if an email:

  • Creates urgency (“Please handle ASAP” or “Immediate action required”)
  • Requests sensitive information (payroll, banking, login details)
  • Comes from an address that looks almost right but slightly off
  • Includes unexpected attachments or links
  • Feels unusual compared to how that person normally communicates

What to Do

  • Pause before acting — urgency is often a tactic
  • Verify the request another way (call, text, or speak in person)
  • Do not click links or open attachments unless you are sure they are safe
  • When in doubt, ask — it’s always okay to double check

WDLT Reminder: The Two-Person Rule

To help protect our team and the people we support:

  • Any email involving sensitive financial or personal information should include a second internal team member
  • If you receive a request like this from only one person, treat it as unverified until confirmed

We’re in This Together

Email safety is not about catching mistakes — it’s about supporting one another and keeping our systems, our team, and our Individuals safe.

If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and reach out.
